Storytelling for Science

  • SDSU Scripps Cottage 5500 Campanile Dr. San Diego, CA 92182 (map)

Broad public understanding of science is crucially important in our world today, yet many segments of our population remain uninformed--or even skeptical--of the important contributions scientists make towards public health, new technology, sustainability and further exploration of our universe. Oftentimes, scientists themselves are only trained in skills appropriate for communicating their work to other scientists and not the general public. Scientists need a tool to better communicate their work to a diverse audience of “non-scientists” for additional funding, promotion of their work, and a stronger understanding of science in our communities.

Storytelling for Science is a workshop to train SDSU science students and faculty to effectively communicate their scientific research to a broader, “non-scientist” audience through storytelling. The workshop will begin with a discussion of the potential stories that could be told around science and then walk participants through the process of crafting stories from their own experiences. Storytelling will be broken down into its individual elements and participants will work collaboratively to share their stories and exchange constructive feedback with one another. The workshop will also explore how the participant’s stories can be reframed for grant writing, public relations, “elevator pitches,” presentations, casual conversation and more. By the end of the workshop participants will have one story completed plus the tools to craft more.

Storytelling inspires empathy and understanding, and helps the storyteller paint a more vivid and memorable picture of events. Through a strong understanding of storytelling, science students and researchers can better reach beyond the lab and into the community to share their passion and knowledge of science.

SDSU students and faculty with prior, current, or envisioned research will be invited to register. Outside attendees are welcome to attend as space allows.
